In 1702, what is now Dumbarton Oaks was known as a piece of land called the Rock of Dumbarton, owned by a colonel. Acquired 100 years later by a new owner, a house was built, the surviving parts of which still stand and serve as the center of Dumbarton Oaks today. From then, the property passed through a series of owners, until it was purchased by art collectors in 1920, eventually expanding the property to a total of 54 acres.

The Presbytère, also known as The Presbytère houses, were originally funded by a Spanish philanthropist to resemble Louisiana’s Cabildo in 1791. The Cabildo was a Spanish Colonial building used by the local government and remains Louisiana’s most important historical building. While the Presbytère portrayed the same elegance as The Cabildo, the structure was built on the site of Capuchin monks, giving The Presbytère its name.

This structure is known to be the oldest house in New York City – nearly 400 years old. That is ancient for the United States, considering our short history compared to the rest of the world. Originally built by European migrants, it remains the oldest example of a Dutch saltbox frame house in the USA, although it’s been restored a handful of times over the years.

At the end of his life, Edgar Allan Poe resided in this small cottage in the Bronx. His wife, Virginia, suffered from Tuberculosis and the pair thought that a new lifestyle, away from the polluted streets of downtown NYC, would help her to recover her health. Of course, being away from the hustle and bustle of city life also encouraged Poe’s writing, and he crafted famous works like “Annabel Lee”, “The Bells”, and “Eurika” while living here.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio

Well-known architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic house and design studio was first built in 1889. He was just 22 years old and needed a $5,000 loan from his employer. Wow, those were the days!

He and his family lived there until 1909 and helped raise six children during his time living there, now known as one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
